IG Metall, Germany's largest industrial trade union with 2.2 million members, is pushing for legislative changes that would give workers explicit rights to understand and challenge AI systems that affect their employment. The proposal, published as a 34-page policy paper this month, calls for mandatory algorithmic impact assessments before any AI system is deployed in a workplace.
The core demands include: the right to a human-readable explanation of any automated decision affecting work assignments, schedules, or performance evaluations; the right to challenge and override AI recommendations through a formal dispute process; and mandatory consultation with works councils before deploying any new AI system.
"Artificial intelligence is not a neutral tool," said Christiane Benner, president of IG Metall. "It encodes decisions about whose work matters and whose doesn't. Workers must have a voice in how these systems are designed and deployed."
German manufacturers are watching closely. The country's automotive sector, which employs 800,000 workers directly, is among the most aggressive adopters of AI for production planning and quality control. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen all use AI-driven scheduling systems that would fall under IG Metall's proposed transparency requirements.
The German Labor Ministry has not yet taken a position on the proposal but is expected to open consultations in Q4 2026.
