Private 5G Is Finally Delivering on Its Factory Promise — Here's What Changed

For three years, private 5G in manufacturing was a PowerPoint technology — impressive in vendor demos, frustrating in practice. Latency was inconsistent, handoffs between cells dropped connections, and the cost of deploying a standalone network inside a plant could exceed $500,000 before a single sensor was connected.
That's changing. Nokia's latest industrial 5G release, deployed at a BMW plant in Regensburg, achieved sub-5ms latency with 99.99% reliability across 14,000 connected devices. Ericsson's partnership with Hitachi Vantara has produced similar results at a steel mill in Osaka, supporting real-time quality inspection cameras that previously required hardwired connections.
The breakthrough isn't in the radio technology — it's in the edge compute integration. By co-locating 5G core functions with industrial edge servers, vendors have eliminated the round-trip latency that made early deployments unreliable for time-critical applications like robotic control and safety systems.
Costs are also dropping. Celona's enterprise 5G platform now starts at $85,000 for a mid-size facility, down from $250,000 two years ago. AWS Private 5G and Microsoft's Azure Private 5G Core are pushing prices lower still by bundling connectivity with cloud services.
The remaining challenge is spectrum. In the US, CBRS shared spectrum works well for most industrial applications, but manufacturers running autonomous vehicles or safety-critical systems increasingly want dedicated licensed spectrum — and the FCC allocation process hasn't kept pace with demand.
